For numerous parents, potty training may be one of the most discouraging and hindering parts of early child rearing. In the act of weaning their children from diapers to the potty, a mother or father ought to learn to be a psychologist, a teacher, and, at times, a drill sergeant.

There are in a literal sense hundreds of books on the subject, galore of them more than a few hundred pages in length, detailing the best methods to use in potty training, and surely an entire field of child psychology consecrated to the subject, and still, it has not yet been perfected to a science. Every child will learn at a dissimilar pace, and each child will respond to dissimilar proficiencies than the next child.

Serious study into the psychology of potty training began, of course, with Sigmund Freud, who put forth that potty training is one of the most primary elements in the early phases of an individual’s psychological development. The standard theory being that a child will have to be taught that bodily desires do not always take prompt precedence over social and other imperatives. As such, a child who is potty trained poorly may grow up to experience difficulties in controlling their own inhibitions in a social setting, and a child who is potty trained too rigorously may grow up to experience issues of self worth centred around cleanliness and perfection.

While some of Sigmund Freud’s theories have been considered less and less indispensable over time by the psychological community at large, they stay the foundation upon which much of progressed psychology is based, and Freud’s theories on potty training are no exception.

While dissimilar children may respond differently to respective methods, the one constant, believed by closely all child analysts, is that a potty training routine will have to stay consistent, and must focus on positive reinforcement as opposed to punishment or scolding. In short, a child spends the basi year and a half of life using diapers. Rather than punishing a child for doing something they consider normal, it is much more effective to reward them for taking a developmental step forward.

Between the ages of eighteen months and two years of age, most children enter a phase wherein they hope to earn parental approval. Almost invariably, child psychologists commend making the most of this time by focusing on potty training. Some parents wait too long, and wind up with their children going through a stubborn, rebellious phase, where they are more concerned with asserting their independence than they are with impressing their parents. It’s surely not inconceivable to instruct a stubborn child to use the potty, but it’s not one thing if not an uphill battle.

In general, it’s a good idea to make the act of potty training fun. You need your child’s cooperation. Obviously this begins with a training potty, and Fisher Price’s My Potty Friend is as good a place to commence as any, with a clicking “flush” lever, and an actual toilet paper roll holder. Furthermore, there must be a heap of form of consistent reward scheme in place. Many parents opt for the “star system”, wherein a gold star sticker is placed on the calendar (one for number one, and two for number two, of course). When a sure number of stars have been reached, the child may be rewarded with anything from a new children’s book, to a trip to the pet store, so long as it is something that the child enjoys.

However, ultimately, the most crucial reward system in potty training is plainly parental praise. Let your child know you love them, and let them recognise when you are happy with their progress.

5LOVE IT!!!!

I LOVE THIS SEAT!!! my little boy is 2 and is37 inches tall and 36 lbs and many potty seats were too small and uncomfortable for him. This one is cushy, big, but not too big and has a high enough splash guard to thwart the squirts!!Highly recommended!

5My son loves this seat!
By Sarah Rodenbaugh
I got this seat because of the height of the shield for my son. The other potty seats I found had such a flat shield that it may as well not have been there. This one works perfectly! It fits the toilet well and doesn’t slide around (even when he turns half sideways so he can flush) and easily stores behind the toilet against the wall when we aren’t using it. I would recommend it to anyone that is potty training a boy!

5Great
By Mommy & Nurse
We just bought this potty seat for our 17 month old who is starting to show interest in the “big potty”. He fits on it great, and enjoys the “handles”. We have found the shield on the front useful, but it does detach as well. The seat has small foam pieces on the bottom that give it a “non skid” surface against your toilet seat. It is easy to remove when not in use.
